National Briefing | Southwest: Texas: Conservative Student Group Draws Fire for Immigration Game

A conservative student group announced Monday that it will perform a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game at the University of Texas at Austin, drawing condemnation from Democrats and a threat of expulsion. Members of the Young Conservatives of Texas will wander the campus Wednesday wearing indicators that say “illegal immigrant,” and college students who capture them and consider them to the group’s recruiting table will get $ 25 present certificates. The group’s spokesman, Lorenzo Garcia, said the purpose was to spark discussion about unlawful immigration. The Texas Democratic Celebration condemned the game and pointed out that Mr. Garcia lately was a paid personnel member with Greg Abbott’s Republican campaign for governor. The campaign’s press secretary, Avdiel Huerta, stated it “has no affiliation with this repugnant work.” Gregory Vincent, the university’s vice president for diversity, said that if the members carried out their program, they would be “ignoring the honor code and contributing to the degradation of our campus culture.” College students located guilty of violating the honor code could encounter expulsion.
