It was by typing his interests into Google that Theo Cost discovered the masters degree he would go on to examine: art and politics.

Art and politics may possibly not appear an obvious mixture, but when you believe about it, modern art typically does have a political message, says Price who finished the course studying component time at Goldsmiths, University of London

“Artwork offers you a freedom to check out politics in a way that every day politics doesn’t often permit. Artwork gives a diverse viewpoint.”

Cost studied a BA in fine art at Sheffield Hallam University, in which his interest was sparked by an “artwork activist” who lectured at his university.

Price tag says: “That was a large influence on me and inspired me to do a great deal of overall performance and political function.”

If you feel political art is serious and humourless, consider yet again. “I was a clown for a whilst,” says Price, when speaking about what he did for the ten many years between his BA and MA.

“We set up the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army: activist clowns. We would ‘arrest’ politicians at the G8. We toured Palestine, and Sri Lanka soon after the tsunami, calling for social and environmental justice. It was activism, but via a imaginative lens.”

Following a decade of campaigning, the MA presented an possibility to reflect upon his suggestions.

Price says: “I imagined it was a excellent notion, to kick myself up the arse a bit. My tasks up to that point had been a single-dimensional.

“An MA like art and politics is 80% theoretical, so I knew I would be thrown a good deal of concept I hadn’t had the self confidence to study prior to. I desired to challenge myself.”

Value, who is dyslexic, identified the necessary reading a challenge. “I did two hours reading through a night,” he says.

Receiving a distinction for every essay came as a satisfied shock, and created him consider yet again about his academic possible.

He says: “Suddenly you realise you have this theoretical weaponry to inform your operate and your place in the world. It’s addictive.”

Of the 120 credits that make up the art and politics MA, 30 are for undertaking perform. Cost says: “The tutors get in touch with it, ‘putting your concepts into the world’. We had been taking philosophy for a walk.”

Price and four other college students chose Millwall Football Club as their venture website. After winning the believe in of the club, they put on 3 occasions:

• A football match in between Goldsmiths and Millwall’s youth club opened the undertaking, getting rid of barriers in between locals and Goldsmiths college students.

• An extract from composer Jocelyn Pook’s football opera Ingerland, was played during half time of a property game. Price says: “In the opera, there are Millwall chants, so when we played it, loads of followers commenced joining in. We felt like we would had a mini-breakthrough.”

• A Millwall supporter and former dockworker referred to as Bernie gave a speak in Canary Wharf’s HSBC tower, a former docklands web site. “We were trying to bring these two worlds with each other. Bernie was so a lot far more interesting than the bankers.”

Price tag now runs Cobra: A Vital Response, a undertaking that feedback on the top-level Cobra meetings named by the government when crises erupt at property and abroad.

Cost has drawn artists collectively to make function in the aftermath of Algeria’s hostage predicament in January, the murder of Lee Rigby in Might, and the shopping centre massacre in Kenya in September. The project responds to the crisis itself, but also questions whether Cobra meetings are a political instrument.

“The last three instances Cobra has convened have been simply because of terrorism. Considering the many other emergencies happening in the globe, it truly is intriguing.”

Value is a fan of part-time examine. He says: “The MA is very intense, and component-time review permitted me to form my perspectives progressively.”

He was inspired by theorists much more than artists. “How can I reinterpret that theory, how can I use that in the planet? That’s the game,” he says. “Art has received to have an element of intrigue, or cheekiness. One thing to capture people’s imagination. And then it requires off.”
