Video of Alleged Sex Assault Is Investigated at Seton Hall

A university softball player informed campus authorities she had been assaulted at an off-campus party on Nov. sixteen. She then reported the assault to the police in South Orange, the place the university is.

Campus and police authorities said they believed that it was filmed with a cellphone, and that the video had been shared amongst college students at the university.

The South Orange police said the matter had been referred to the Essex County prosecutor’s workplace, which said it would not comment on the investigation.

NJ.com, the internet site of The Star-Ledger and other nearby publications, reported that it had obtained a 12-second clip purporting to be from the video that was circulated. It is shot in low light, the website reported, and shows a woman bent over with a man standing behind her. Folks at the celebration can be heard laughing and cheering. The web site reported that men and women with information of the video mentioned the assailant was not a Seton Hall pupil, and that there had been reports of underage drinking at the party.

“The recording or sharing of photos of the alleged incident is fully unacceptable and contrary to Seton Hall’s Catholic mission and commitment to fostering an academic and social surroundings in which all college students are respected,” the university said in a statement.

Seton Hall said it had referred the matter to the police and conducted an internal investigation.

Even though university campuses have prolonged struggled with the usually twin difficulties of sexual assault and underage consuming, the use of technologies and social media has even more challenging matters.
