In the days following Saturday’s holiday dinners — in Commons for freshmen and in the residential colleges for upperclassmen — a slew of students located themselves with upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea. The cause: foods poisoning. Although the source of the meals poisoning has yet to be officially determined, all students interviewed who fell sick mentioned they consumed seafood, in the kind of sushi, over the weekend just before getting to be sick.

“I was in [Yale Well being] myself with meals poisoning on Saturday night,” Shelby Baird ’14 mentioned. “While I was there college students were calling in left and correct about possessing the exact same thing. There must have been 25 calls whilst I was there. The nurses looks to feel it had something to do with the seafood.”

Paul Genecin, the director of Yale Wellness, advised the Information Monday evening that Yale Overall health had heard from about 20 students with food poisoning, but that most of them were staying in their dorm rooms and calling Yale Well being for directions on how to deal with their sickness.

According to Genecin, no students required more critical care at Yale-New Haven Hospital. All college students interviewed said they recovered inside “a couple of days.”

On Saturday evening, one,200 college students were served throughout the freshman vacation dinner in Commons and 4,200 upperclassmen have been served in the residential colleges, in accordance to Cathy Van Dyke, the University Director of Residential Dining.

“Yale Dining has been working collaboratively with Yale Health administrators to discover the trigger of these incidents and we  continue to keep track of the predicament,” Van Dyke mentioned. “There has been no indication that meals served by Yale Dining has been the source of these troubles.”

Nonetheless, there are indications that sushi may possibly be the principal lead to. Sushi was served at the freshman dinner and as an appetizer ahead of the holiday dinners in the residential schools. According to Van Dyke, Yale Dining will get its sushi from from an out-of-state commercial supplier.

Several other students who went to Sushi Mizu on Whalley Avenue also became sick over the weekend. Sushi Mizu could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

The New Haven Division of Wellness is accountable for inspecting and licensing dining establishments in the city to guarantee they meet sanitary situations.
