Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute


The University of Notre Dame will be a spouse in NASA’s Solar Method Exploration Investigation Virtual Institute (SSERVI), a new organization that expands the scope of the NASA Lunar Science Institute to 1 that includes close to-Earth asteroids and the moons of Mars.


Clive R. Neal, a Notre Dame planetary geologist, was portion of a Universities Space Research Association (USRA) crew that was selected for SSERVI membership. Scientists from USRA’s Lunar and Planetary Institute, the Johnson Space Center and the Arecibo Observatory and researchers from 6 universities, which includes Notre Dame, will be one particular of eight initial teams in SSERVI.


Under the auspices of SSERVI, the team will continue to integrate the science and exploration pursuits in a coordinated research of the moon and the asteroids that bombard the Earth-moon technique. These scientific studies will incorporate observations of current close to-Earth asteroids, scientific studies of past collision occasions in the Earth-moon program and the collisional evolution of the asteroid belt that delivers people objects to near-Earth area.


Neal is a member and former chair of NASA’s Lunar Exploration Evaluation Group, which is accountable for analyzing scientific, technical, industrial and operational concerns linked with lunar exploration. The group provides findings from these analyses to NASA by means of the NASA Advisory Council.


He also is a member of NASA’s Lunar Science Institute, which is a decide on staff of scientists tasked with expanding the nation’s technical capabilities in lunar science and developing educational opportunities in area science.
