They sent the application to Y Combinator, a business that offers seed income and guidance for particular begin-ups in exchange for a percentage of their profits.

But Ohanian and Huffman have been rejected — at least until finally Paul Graham, one of the founders of Y Combinator, reached out to the two of them personally and provided the duo a opportunity to come up with a new concept. “We had no idea what we were undertaking. We had no business commencing one thing that would be the front web page of the Internet,” Ohanian explained. “This was before we had 90 million distinctive visitors a month. We had two.”

However Reddit was accepted by Graham and Y Combinator, there had been “haters” of the undertaking, as Ohanian known as them, from the start off.

About four months soon after Reddit’s official launch, staff at Yahoo acquired wind of the site’s existence and invited Ohanian and Huffman out to Silicon Valley. But at the meeting — which served as an possibility for Ohanian and Huffman to pitch their web site to Yahoo for potential collaboration — Ohanian explained factors rapidly went sour. Though Ohanian explained that the website was new and that its web visitors was expanding rapidly, the Yahoo representative in the meeting was not impressed. His remark, Ohanian explained, quickly became Ohanian and Huffman’s motivation to realize success.

Ohanian cited Brandon Stanton, creator of the popular Humans of New York photograph-weblog, and Zach Weiner, of “Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal” fame. He employed these two folks, amongst other people, as examples of individuals who “are using the Internet for wonderful.”

“Sucking is the very first stage to getting excellent at one thing,” Ohanian stated.
