Concerns about concerns in the information for college students 13 and older.

Natalie Angier wrote in September about the paradox of why girls who were equally competent and assured as boys in science and mathematics even now chose not to enter the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math. The statistics are baffling. For illustration, girls earned 37 % of personal computer science degrees in 1985, nevertheless only 18 % in 2010. And only 1-fifth of physics Ph.D.’s in this country are awarded to females.

Why are not more girls choosing to pursue careers in math and science?

In “A Viral Video Encourages Women to Turn out to be Engineers,” Claire Cain Miller writes about a viral video made by a new toy company that is trying to change those statistics.

Who mentioned women want to dress in pink and play with dolls, especially when they could be creating Rube Goldberg machines instead?

That is the message of a video that has gone viral considering that it was posted on YouTube this week — an ad for GoldieBlox, a start-up toy organization that sells video games and books to motivate women to turn out to be engineers.

In the video, 3 girls are bored viewing princesses in pink on Television. So they grab a device kit, goggles and a challenging hat and set to work creating a Rube Goldberg machine that sends pink teacups and child dolls flying via the home, employing umbrellas, ladders and, of program, GoldieBlox toys.

It all occurs to the tune of “Girls” by the Beastie Boys, a decidedly anti-feminist ballad that the ad’s creators rewrote.

The Beastie Boys sang, “Girls to do the dishes/Women to clean up my area/Girls to do the laundry/Women and in the bathroom/Girls, that’s all I genuinely want is women.”

One particular of the actresses in the ad sings: “Girls create a spaceship/Girls code the new app/Women that develop up being aware of/That they can engineer that/Women, that is all we really want is girls/To bring us up to velocity it’s women/Our possibility is women/Don’t underestimate girls….”

Women are vastly underrepresented as engineers at tech organizations, largely simply because of a provide difficulty. In 2010, ladies earned just 18 % of computer science degrees, down from 37 percent in 1985, according to the National Center for Ladies and Info Technological innovation. The issue, a lot of analysts say, commences in childhood, when teachers and dad and mom do not inspire girls to pursue engineering.
