I didn’t have a clear notion of what I needed to do when I grew up. But I knew a single issue, I loved principal college. I adored all my teachers at Beech Grove in Oswestry (now amalgamated into Holy Trinity) and can remember almost everything about them, down to detail about individual lessons. I cried my eyes out when I left.

Secondary college wasn’t this kind of a good results for me. I did okay in my GCSEs but did not even have the confidence to remain on and do my A-amounts. I felt I just wasn’t clever adequate to do them so I left college and grew to become a hairdresser for two years. I loved it but it was not genuinely tough me.

Then my aunt gave me a university prospectus and I saw there was a degree in primary school education. I realised that’s what I had to do and so I went back and did my A-levels at university and then two many years later on acquired on the course, a main education BA at Glyndwr University in Wales. I reside correct on the Welsh border so this meant I was ready to have placements in each Welsh and English schools, functioning with two distinct curriculums, which was truly interesting. I have not worked in Welsh speaking colleges but there was very a distinction in between colleges in the two nations. In Wales children answer the register in Welsh, request to go to the loo in Welsh and the lessons usually have a Welsh focus, which really motivates the children who are so passionate about their heritage.

When I certified as a teacher it took me 18 months to discover a work. That was fairly a shock. I had no thought it was going to be so tough but there have been one hundred men and women going for one post.

I had 10 interviews, some of them in schools I was really interested in. Others, as I got more desperate, in colleges that I knew weren’t really a fit for my expertise and interests. And maybe that was the difficulty. I didn’t want to work also far from where I live as my husband has a regional organization so we couldn’t relocate. But I was looking in five counties.

Whilst I was seeking for a long lasting position, I kept myself myself hectic and did 1-to-one tutoring, including posts in a school exactly where I was employed by Shropshire County council to assist twelve kids in year 6. That was truly rewarding. To leading up my pay, I did provide educating. Then in 2011 I got an e mail from the headteacher of Previous Park major in Telford saying they had a vacancy and I must apply for it. She had been passed my electronic mail by an additional head who had interviewed me for a task a couple of weeks before. I must have manufactured some impression even even though I didn’t get that occupation.

So I came and looked around Previous Park and as soon as I entered the college I knew I needed to function right here. I had been at so many colleges, but Old Park felt diverse, it just received me. I truly fought for this occupation due to the fact as quickly as I met my likely new class I knew I had to educate them.

The interview went genuinely well then I had to do an example lesson. In most colleges you are asked to educate a maths or English lesson but in this college I was permitted to do precisely what I liked. So I planned a science lesson and took the young children out into the hall to act out the circulatory technique. I actually had the possibility to present what I can do and the headteacher of Previous Park is actually massive on creativity – I was so happy when I received the work.

Teaching is more difficult operate than you consider it will be, especially the paperwork which is never ending, but being in the classroom with the kids is the ideal job ever. It really is so rewarding.

I really feel truly lucky to operate in a college in which creativity is so applauded. We are not in an affluent spot so I’m so proud that we get the possibility to give college students experiences they would by no means have outdoors college and open up their eyes to the planet.

Final January, the whole personnel did an Inset day of education to be Arts Award assessors. So this means we can place the kids forward for Arts Awards which has an wonderful possibility and the college students are so thrilled to get their Arts Award certificates. Children will say they cannot draw but when you hold going with a venture they find their artistic inspiration. I had one particular student last year who believed artwork was a joke and that he wasn’t very good at it. He ended up generating such fantastic operate that I knew he was actually proud of. A whole lot of children right here struggle with reading and maths, so when they find some thing they can excel at and accomplish in this has a enormous knock on impact on their academic work.

I’ve also been concerned in the In Harmony undertaking, which is all about inspiring children in deprived communities via music and producing an orchestra. All our college students have an instrument and they are all provided it to consider residence for three years. 1 day a week we have an orchestra.

It is great to have a headteacher who is so extremely innovative and will get every person so enthusiastic about what we do. I think creativity and arts learning is important. It tends to make young children really feel so very good about themselves.
